LAGUNA NIGUEL – After slogging through seven games of the toughest “real high school” sectional and regional playoff fields in the country, nothing the North had to offer seemed must of an obstacle for the Eastvale Roosevelt Mustangs in Saturday night’s State Open Division boys’ championship game in Saturday.

And that was the case, as Coach Steve Singleton’s club dropped the Brayden Burries hammer on San Francisco Riordan, 80-60, in the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento.

The Mustangs got a State Open Division final record 44 points from the Burries – one of six California-based McDonald’s All-Americans from the Class of 2025, two of those residing at Prolific Prep School in Napa – after he had dropped 28 on Harvard-Westlake (March 8) and 37 against Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks (Tuesday night) in the South Regional to earn the trip North.

The beatdown in Sacramento – Riordan came into the game at 29-1, the loss coming to JSerra in the Dec. 30 Torrey Pines Holiday Classic final in San Diego – capped a remarkable two seasons in which Burries, Issac Williamson and Myles Walker were in uniform.

They were a cumulative 66-6 in that stretch, with the losses last season to the 2024 CIF SS and State Open champion Harvard-Westlake (in the sectional and regional final), as well as SS Open teams Centennial and JSerra.

This season’s losses were to San Antonio Brennan (on the road, 67-64, on Nov. 30) and Washington, DC Gonzaga (in Springfield, MA, 73-55, on Jan. 2) when each was ranked in the Top 3 in the country in the by MaxPreps.

The Mustangs were 10-zip against the teams that played in the CIF SS Open Division playoffs, and 12-zip against the final BurlisonOnBasketball SoCal Top 30.

Burries (who attended Riverside Poly as a freshman with Williamson before players left for Roosevelt and were ineligible to play as sophomores), joined Cleveland Cavaliers’ all-star Evan Mobley – when he played for Rancho Christian – as the only player to win consecutive Platinum Division Most Outstanding players at the Dec. 30 Classic at Damien the past two years,

Rounding out the Top 10 in final SoCal pecking order are the other nine teams that made up the CIF SS Open field (it was expanded from the usual eight, with La Mirada and Heritage Christian getting the last two slots).

Roosevelt is one of the 18 Top 30 finishers who played in last Dec. 26-30’s Classic at Damien, as well as one of the eight regional finalists from last Tuesday night and – joining Carmichael Jesuit (66-53 over Chatsworth in D-II) and San Gabriel Academy (52-51 vs. Sunnyvale King’s Academy in D-III).

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
