LAGUNA NIGUEL – And we’re down to the last two weeks of the regular season . . .

*As was the theme of last week’s SoCal Top 30 teams rating update, it’s all about what happens in Mission and Trinity League showdowns this week.

The results of those games will continue to shape the look of the CIF Southern Section’ s eight-team Open Division playoff field and help determine which of those two mega-leagues clubs will also challenge for a Division I title.

The first of those clashes is set for Monday night (7 o’clock), when No. 3 St. John Bosco plays host to No. 10 Santa Margarita in a rapid-fire rematch of a game played in Orange County Friday night.

The visiting SJB Braves won that one, 77-67, which is why they sit in a tie for the league-lead (at 5-1) with No. 17 Mater Dei.

*Wednesday night, the No. 8 JSerra Lions visit Santa Ana in attempt to extend their win streak to four against Mater Dei. Their current three-game streak is believed to be the longest by an Orange County program against the Monarchs since Gary McKnight took over took over at Mater Dei in 1982.

*And JSerra has another rematch (this one at home in San Juan Capistrano Friday night), against Santa Margarita. The Eagles handled Keith Wilkinson’s Lions, 70-49, when they played in Rancho Santa Margarita on Jan. 10.

*And there will high-profile Trinity and Mission League games on tap Saturday in Inglewood’s Intuit Dome Arena as part of the six-game, Trinity-Mission League Showcase that was originally set for Jan. 10 but postponed because for the catastrophic fires in Southern California.

The most significant of those Saturday games (in relation to the CIF SS’s Open and I Division playoff field makeups) pit Mater Dei against St. John Bosco at 3 o’clock, and No. 6 Notre Dame and 9 Sierra Canyon at 7:30 in a Mission showdown.

*The other Mission contest this week of major importance is set for Tuesday night in Studio City, when No. 1 Harvard-Westlake plays host to Sierra Canyon.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

George Raveling

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.

Gary McKnight

Frank Burlison is one of the most knowledgeable basketball people in the business! His passion for the game puts him at the top of the list. There are very few people whose evaluation skills I trust like I do Frank’s!
