Trinity League shakeup

RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA – The perceived paths that the Trinity League and CIF Southern Open Division races were on were tossed asunder Friday night during a couple of Trinity games.

*The result of the game played at Santa Margarita wasn’t startling but the margin – the host Eagles knocking off JSerra, 70-49 – was.

The Lions came into the game at No. 4 in the CIF Southern Section Computer ratings and 5 in the BurlisonOnBasketball Top 30 while the Eagles were 10 in both ratings.

*But what happened in Santa Ana was near-seismic in its potential impact in the Trinity race and Open playoff pecking order.

Each of the three Trinity games Friday were supposed to be a part of the Mission/Trinity Showcase at the Intuit Dome Arena.

But the Trinity games were returned to home sites when the event was postponed on Thursday because of the rampaging Southland fires.

So, the St. John Bosco vs. Mater Dei clash was moved to the Monarchs’ Santa Ana Campus.

And that’s where the now-hosts – who came into the game at No. 32 in the computer ratings and 20 in the BurlisonOnBasketball Top 30 – stunned the Braves, 62-59.

St. John Bosco (now 17-2 overall and 1-1 in league) started the week – which ended with just one game, with the postponement of the game with Santa Margarita that was scheduled to be played Wednesday – at No. 2 in both rankings.

The Monarchs improved to 14-4 and 2-0.

A shakeup in both ratings entities is in store for Monday .  .  .

The Eagles (15-3 and 1-0) jumped out to a 6-zip advantage and were in front, 33-25, at intermission.

And junior guard Kaiden Bailey (pictured) helped push that edge to 17 points with 11 points in the third quarter, nine of those on 3s – including a 40-foot, buzzer-beater to put his team up, 50-33.

Bailey led all scorers with 25 points, while teammates Dallas Washington (10 in the first quarter) and Brayden Kyman (10 in the fourth quarter) added 17 and 15, respectively.

Senior B.J Davis-Ray – one of seven transfers to start in the game – led the Lions (16-4 and 2-1) with 16 points.

In the third Trinity League game played Friday night, host Orange Lutheran (12-7 and 1-2) knocked off Servite (11-7 and 0-3), 74-48.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
