LAGUNA NIGUEL – We’re down to two and a half weeks of regular-season action remaining for boys CIF Southern Section basketball teams . . . and three and a half for the L.A. City Section.

There remain a multitude of games to be played that will impact the shape of the CIF SS playoff divisions (that will be released on Feb. 9).

Relative to the Open Division, those are all being played in the Mission and Trinity Leagues this week, notably:

*New No. 1 Harvard-Westlake (following Roosevelt’s loss in the HoopHall Classic in Springfield, MA, Monday) is at No. 4 Notre Dame on Friday night.

*No. 2 St. John Bosco (which had Brandon McCoy, Jr., back on its home court, after his recovery from a late November foot injury) for its 64-62 win over No. 9 JSerra Monday night) visits Orange County to play at No. 8 Santa Margarita Friday night. The Braves and Eagles will get a rematch three days later, in Bellflower.

It’s a challenging week for the Eagles: They’re at No. 18 Mater Dei Wednesday night.

*No. 10 Sierra Canyon faces No. 12 Crespi in Encino Wednesday night.

*A game whose outcome will impact the seeding for the first-Baseline League Tournament is in Rancho Cucamonga Wednesday night, when the No. 19 Cougars play host to No. 20 Damien.

*And, on Friday and Saturday, Mater Dei High will play host to the 30th Nike Extravaganza.

Among the teams scheduled to patriciate are the host Monarchs, No. 2 Roosevelt, No. 11 Mira Costa, No. 15 Rolling Hills Prep, No. 16 Los Alamitos, No. 20 Damien and No. 30 Centennial.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

Gary McKnight

Frank Burlison is one of the most knowledgeable basketball people in the business! His passion for the game puts him at the top of the list. There are very few people whose evaluation skills I trust like I do Frank’s!

Winningest coach (892-81) in California boys’ basketball history during his 29 seasons at Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
