DUNCANVILLE, TX – By the conclusion of Saturday night’s action in the Pangos All-South Frosh/Soph boys’ basketball camp, it was apparent that Reese Alston was as good any as any player in the Duncanville Fieldhouse.

And by the time the camp had wrapped up Sunday afternoon following the Top 30 Cream of the Crop All-Star Game, Alston had stacked even more evidence for those willing to  present the case that he must be considered among the upper tier of the top point guard prospects in the national Class of 2027.

The Second Baptist (Houston) High sophomore – and son of former NBA standout guard Rafer Alston – scored 13 points and dished eight assists to help his dark jersey-wearing all-star team to as eased up, 83-71, win over the white jerseys.

Alston’s final-game performance sealed his event Most Outstanding Player tag, with sophomore forward Malachi Booker (pictured) my choice as the runner-up.

Sophomores Xander Pruzinsky (10 points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots) and Galen Roberts (11 points and three rebounds), of the winning team, shared Top 30 Game Most Outstanding Player kudos.

Booker and Christopher Hunt scored 11 points apiece for the white jerseys.

This was the second stop on the fall Pangos Frosh/Soph trail, following the Sept. 21-22 event in Long Beach (CA).

The next Frosh/Soph sessions are set for Oct. 19&20 (Chicago/Midwest) and Oct. 26&27 (Philadelphia/East).

My choice for the Top 13 players (based upon “performance” and not “potential” follow.

Note: Texas sophomores James McCall-Spears (Lakeview Centennial in Garland) and Dawson Battie (St. Mark’s in Dallas) were outstanding on Sunday but weren’t included in the following list because they didn’t play on Saturday.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
