WALNUT CREEK, Ca. – The 2nd annual Pro-West Exposure Camp wrapped up in nifty fashion Sunday afternoon via its Top 20 All-Star game that threw an even brighter spotlight on some of the top high school boys basketball players in Northern California.

Sophomore point guard N.J. Gray (Branson in Ross)  scored 12 points and directed the dark jersey-wearing team’s offense near-flawlessly en route to a 92-78 victory over its white jerseys-wearing counterpart in the Tice Valley Community Center.

The dark jerseys also got double-figuring scoring out of Dominic Walker (Hayward Moreau/15 points); Brayde Kuykendall (San Ramon California/13); Thomas Conley (Danville San Ramon Valley/12) and Drew Vixon (Brentwood Liberty/11).

Conley’s twin brother and San Ramon Valley teammate, Elliot Conley, led the white jerseys with a game-high 21 points that included three 3s while sophomore guard Jaiden Miller (Liberty) chipped in with 15 (including four 3s).

In the Top 40 clash, senior forward Cormac Springsteel (Tahoe City North Tahoe; on the California side of the Cali-Nevada border) of the dark jerseys scored 13 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in their 82-76 toppling of the white jerseys.

Gray (pictured) and junior center Connor Sheridan (Portola) were my choices as the camp’s co-Most Outstanding Players.

The 12 players who most impressed me with their effort, attitudes and production over the weekend follow.

The choices were not  based upon “potential” or how I project them as “college prospects”.

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
