LONG BEACH – Many of the western-based boys basketball standouts in the Classes of 2027 and ’28 jammed the McBride High gymnasium Saturday for the annual Pangos All-West Frosh/Soph Camp.
Players from the Southland, Northern California, Arizona, Nevada and other states as far away as Georgia were among Saturday standouts in an event that attracted nearly 200 participants.
Among some of those who rocked it, baby, during their two games they played Saturday were:
*The two best Class of 2027 point guard-types from the northern portion of Cali, 6-foot N.J. Gray (Branson in Ross) and 6-1 Siincere Hudson (Inderkum in Sacramento).
I selected Gray (pictured) as the Most Outstanding Guard during the Sept. 7&8 Pro-West Exposure Camp in Walnut Creek, and he was every bit as impressive Saturday as he was in that NorCal event.
*Two San Fernando Valley-based sophomores also had some dominant moments Saturday, as 6-5 left-hander Josiah Nance (Notre Dame in Sherman Oaks; he played at Heritage Christian as a freshman) and 6-5 bouncy forward Max Hackney (Heritage Christian in Northridge) didn’t waste any time in their first games overpowering opponents.
*Another member of the BurlisonOnBasketball all-Southern California Freshman team last season, 6-5 (and built like a defensive end) G.C. Eboigbodin, crushed foes in and around the lane like they were so many 175-pound running backs.
*A bunch of sophomore posts – originally from Canada but now playing for western-based prep school programs – showed off an abundance of athletic and basketball skill Saturday.
Notable among those were 6-9 Godson Okokoh (Southern California Academy) and Isaac Gonda CIA-Bella Vista in Phoenix.
*Las Vegas Bishop Gorman was represented by a bunch of players that will help continue Coach Grant Rice’s program’s Nevada dominance.
Those included 6-5 forwards Kameron Cooper and Ilan Nikolov (key contributors as freshmen on a state-title team), and freshmen Terry McKinney (6-5) and Deuce Jones (5-10; he’s the son of former NBA guard Freddie Jones).
*A couple of other freshmen who played well Saturday have impressive hoops bloodlines.
Six-eight Owen Eteuati-Edwards (Arcadia) is the son of former Long Beach State post Frankie Edwards, while 6-3 Isaiah Williamson (Los Alamitos) is the brother of Eastvale Roosevelt senior standout guard Issac Williamson (who committed to the University of New Mexico last week).
*And the Class of 2027 standout from Georgia was 6-3 Tre Keith (Tri Cities in East Point).
Action continues Sunday morning at 8:45 with the final round of camp “league” games, with all-star contests set for 1:45 and 2:45 in the afternoon.
All games are live-streamed and archived by BallerTV.
