LAGUNA NIGUEL, Ca. – Gymnasiums in Long Beach, Garden Grove, Anaheim and Irvine will play host to boys high school basketball camp and club events this week during the first of three NCAA “evaluation” periods this month.
Coaching staffs among the 350-plus Division I-designated programs in the NCAA will be allowed to attend the events, from Thursday thru Sunday afternoons, to watch potential-recruits play in person.
Many Division I programs are expected to be represented during the Pangos Premier 80 Showcase, set to tip off at 12:30 Thursday afternoon at McBride High in Long Beach (7025 Parkcrest).
Approximately 80 players (with remaining high school or prep school eligibility) will be divided among eight teams, with each squad (and player) getting two games staggered over the four hours.
Among the players expected to participate are standout, SoCal-based juniors-to-be in 6-foot-3 Kaiden Bailey (who scored more than 1,000 in two seasons at Crean Lutheran but is now attending Calvary Chapel in Santa Ana); 6-7 Brayden Kyman (Santa Margarita); 6-8 Christian Collins (Westchester); and 6-3 Isaiah Rogers (Corona Centennial).
Some of the players from the Class of 2025 members scheduled to attend include Brayden Harris (6-5/San Jose Valley Christian); Anthony Moore (6-6/Stockton Lincoln); Denis Woods (pictured/6-2/Bishop Montgomery); Malachi Knight and Josh Garland (both 6-4/Leuzinger); and Wesley Waddles (6-6/Viewpoint).
McBride will also play host to the Pangos Summer Sweet 16, with a couple of 17s divisions and showcase games on the 16s and 15s levels. That is set to tip at 12:50 Friday afternoon.
Irvine’s Momentous Sports Center (14522 Myford) welcomes 17s, 16s and 15s divisions for the Summer Cali-Live, Session I.
Games at the event are set to begin Wednesday night (6 o’clock), with D-I coaches showing up Thursday thru Saturday.
The Open Gym Premier facility (1500 South Anaheim, nearly in the shadow of the Matterhorn) is the site for The Stage: Final Act, beginning Thursday evening with seven divisions on the 17s, 16s and 15s levels.
And, in Garden Grove, The Map (12552 Western) plays host to the West Coast Elite-fronted SoCal Summer Classic, with competition spread over 17s, 16s, 15s, 14s and 13s divisions. Games also run Thursday thru Sunday.
Other than McBride, all the facilities charge for on-site parking.
The bulk of the better college prospects among SoCal-based players will be playing in events in South Carolina (Nike-fronted Peach Jam and adidas-fronted 3SSB); Georgia (Under Armour Association’s Rise) and in Mesa, AZ (NXTPRO).
