LAS VEGAS – The 22nd Pangos boys basketball All-American Camp wrapped up Tuesday afternoon with a couple of competitive and down-to-the wire all-star games at Bishop Gorman High.
In the Top 60 Cream of the Crop clash, 6-foot-7 Chuck Love III (from the Class of 2025; he attends La Lumiere in La Port, IN) scored 25 points to help the blue jerseys edge their red counterparts, 103-99.
And, in the event’s finale, the red jerseys – despite trailing by 12 points in the first half and six at intermission – used a dominant, Brayden Burries-sparked second half to knock off the blue jerseys, 114-106, in the Top 30 game.
The 6-foot-4 Burries – California’s Junior of the Year after leading the Eastvale Roosevelt Mustangs to a 31-4 mark and No. 2 finish in the state ratings – was my choice as the three-day event’s Most Outstanding Player.
Projected as a “shooting guard”, “wing” or “combo guard” by most media outlets and recruiting analysts, Burries floor leadership, decision-making and spot-on passing in six games (five of those with “Notre Dame” in the Big 10/ACC slate) demonstrated succinctly that future beyond high school may be a de facto “point guard”.
The performances of two of his Roosevelt classmates and long-time buddies, Issac Williamson and Myles Walker, also served as reminders as to why the Mustangs’ perimeter play will have view equals in the 2024-25 season.
Burries, with 10 points, six assists and five rebounds, was one of six red jersey-wearing players to score in double figures, with another California standout – Tounde Yessoufou – leading the way with 20 and Jerry Easter adding 19.
Yessoufou (Santa Maria St. Joseph) and Jacob Lanier (of Maumelle, AR) – who scored 20 for the blue jerseys – were selected the all-star game Most Outstanding Players by event founder and director, Dinos Trigonis.
Trigonis’ choice for the camp’s MOP was another of the nation’s Top 10 prospects in the Class of 2025, Meleek Thomas of Pittsburgh. Thomas led all scorers with 21 points.
