NORWALK – A couple of Trinity League high school foes turned in impressive efforts for The Arizona Unity/EBYL 17s squad Friday night during one of four showcase games played at Cerritos College during the EHA x MADE Hoops West Mania.

Brandon McCoy Jr. – who helped lead near-by St. John Bosco to a CIF State Division I title in March – scored 17 points and senior-to-be Dallas Washington (Santa Margarita) added a game-high 21 to lead Unity past Jalen Green Elite (which pays on the adidas spring and summer circuit), 71-64.

Washington hit a couple of 3s and smashed three or four dunks (a couple off steals and several following penetrations and dishes by teammates) while McCoy had his usual assortment of high-flying, to-the-rim escapades.

Senior-to-be forward Winters Grady (Prolific Prep) had 18 for JGE (including three 3s), while guard Isaac Carr (Portland Central Catholic) added 17 and was the best-looking jump shooter in the game.

Forward Brandon Benjamin, who attended Mater Dei as a junior but is returning to Canyon in Anaheim for his senior season, scored nine points with six rebounds and five assists for JGE.

In other games:

*JL3 (John Lucas III) 84, YGC Pro 16 17s 67: The Texas-based JL3 EYBL squad got 17 points from senior-to-be Hudson Greer (pictured) while Shelton Henderson chipped in with 20.

Greer has deep Orange County “roots”: His father (Josh Greer) is an Esperanza High graduate who starred at St. Mary’s and the family lived in Irvine before moving to Texas when Hudson was an eighth grader.

*Oakland Soldiers 76, West Coast Elite 52: The Soldiers pulled away in the second half by way of the spectacular play of A.J. Dybansta (18 points), one of the top-rated prospects in the national class of 2025.

Gavin Sykes (scheduled to be a senior at Modesto Christian next season) added 22 points – including four 3s – for the Soldiers.

*Cali Stars Black 60, Team CPSA 48: A balanced scoring attack, led by Rancho Christian senior Brian Amunueke’s 11 points, was enough to overcome the Washington-based opponent.

Games continue in the event (at Cerritos and the MAP in Garden Grove) Saturday and Sunday, with six more “showcase” tilts set to be play at Cerritos beginning at 2:45 Saturday afternoon.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
