LAGUNA NIGUEL – The State Regional playoffs get underway Tuesday evening, with games spread across five divisions – No.’s 1-V.

Open play tips off Wednesday night in Southern California, with quarterfinal games at CIF Southern Section Open semifinalist Sierra Canyon (vs. Central Section runner-up St. Joseph) and San Diego Open champion Carlsbad at home to CIF SS Open semifinalist St. Pius X/St. Matthias Academy.

With 39 boys’ games set for Tuesday in the Southern portion of the regionals, there are a multitude of viewing options, based upon your location and interest – “rooting” or otherwise.

Some of those include, in Orange County:

*CIF SS Division 2AA champion St. Anthony (25-7) at CIF SS Open participant Mater Dei (26-5)/Division I.

*CIF SS 2AA runner-up Rolling Hills Prep (26-6) at CIF SS Open participant JSerra (25-6)/Division I.

*San Diego Section D-I champion Mission Bay (21-11) at CIF SS D-2A semifinalist Corona del Mar (25-7)/Division II.

In the San Fernando Valley:

*San Diego Open team Torrey Pines (21-8) at CIF SS D-1 champion Sherman Oaks Notre Dame (29-3).

*San Diego D-III champion Chula Vista Olympian (28-3) at CIF SS D-3A champion Alemany (20-15)/Division III.

In the San Gabriel Valley:

*San Diego D-II runner-up Rancho Buena Vista (24-8) at CIF SS D-3A runner-up Bosco Tech (23-9)/Division III.

Based on Tuesday night’s results, there could be a boatload of terrific second-round games in Division’s I-V.

Among those are  possible showdowns of the CIF SS D-1 champion and runner-up, Notre Dame and Windward, traveling to CIF SS Open participants JSerra and St. John Bosco (the No. 1 seed with a Tuesday night bye), respectively.

All games are set to tip off at 7 o’clock, unless otherwise noted.

And where am I head Tuesday night?

To Newport Beach, for the Mission Bay-Corona del Mar clash.

Each squad is led by a terrific guard, Caleb Newton for the visitors and Maxwell Scott – each among the best of the western classes of 2026 and ’27, respectively.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
