Twenty-four of the BurlisonOnBasketball SoCal Top 30 boys’ basketball teams will be in action Saturday during seven “showcase” events scattered throughout Southern California.

Two of those – No.’s 3 St. John Bosco and 6 Mater Dei – will be in a key league clash, playing their Trinity contest in the Crypto.com Arena (at 6 o’clock) as part of the five-game Catholic Coastal Classic.

The Braves (Servite) and Monarchs (No. 4 JSerra) will have play host to Trinity League games Friday night before their showdown less than 24 hours later.

No. 6 Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks faces one of Northern California’s top teams, Concord De La Salle, following Mater Dei-SJB in Crypto.com Arena (or, as I will continually refer to it as, “the Staples Center”).

In some of the other events:

*No. 1 Harvard-Westlake faces No. 23 Heritage Christian (5:30) and No. 2 Eastvale Roosevelt takes on Central California’s top team, Santa Maria St. Joseph (7) during the Take Flight Challenge at Redondo Union High.

Those four teams include some of the elite players from the western Class of 2025, in Brayden Burries (pictured), Issac Williamson and Myles Walker (each from Roosevelt) and Tounde Yessoufou (St. Joseph); and Nikolas Khamenia (Harvard-Westlake) and Dillan Shaw and Tae Simmons (both Heritage Christian).

*No.’s 7 St. Pius X/St. Matthias and 8 Sierra Canyon are set to tip off at 7 o’clock at the Elite Invitational at Cerritos College.

*No. 10 Corona Centennial takes on No. 27 Campbell Hall at 6 o’clock at Lynwood High as part of the Real Run Winter Classic.

*And, during the SoCal Showdown at Santiago Canyon College in Orange, there are four games pitting teams in the Top 30: No.’s 13 La Mirada and 19 Rancho Cucamonga (12:30); No. 24 Foothill and 12 Windward (3:45); No. 22 Anaheim Canyon and No. 16 Crespi (7) and No. 11 Etiwanda and 18 West Ranch (8:30).

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
