LAS VEGAS — The high school portion of the 12th Tarkanian Classic tips off Monday morning, with its top-tier Platinum and Ball Dawgs brackets represented by nine states among the 32 teams.

Those two 16-team divisions will compete thru Thursday in tournament host Bishop Gorman High’s main and auxiliary gymnasiums, with the event’s other six divisions at area high schools.

All the action will be streamed lived and archived by BallerTV.

Platinum play gets underway in the main gym at 9 in the morning, when two-time, San Diego Section Open Division champion St. Augustine (7-1), led by Cal State Fullerton-bound guard Lolo Rudolph, takes on Miami (FL) Mater Lakes Academy (5-2).

In the other Bishop Gorman gym, Brooklyn Thomas Jefferson (2-3) and Las Vegas Spring Valley (2-3) start Ball Dawgs action at 10:30 a.m.

Along with Nevada, California, Florida and New York, programs from Arizona, Utah, Louisiana, Ohio, and Virginia are also in the two divisions’ fields.

Perhaps the most compelling of the Monday Platinum matchups is the 1:30 p.m. clash of unbeatens: Utah’s top-ranked team, Alta (7-0/led by University of Utah-bound Jaxon Johnson) facing Fresno’s Clovis West (10-0/paced by terrific 6-4 junior D.J. Stickman).

Other Southern California-based teams who are playing in the two divisions:

(Platinum/main gym) 3 p.m. Downey St. Pius X/St. Matthias (4-1) vs. Henderson (NV) Coronado (4-2); 4:30, North Hollywood Campbell Hall (2-5) vs. Scottsdale Desert Mountain (6-1); 7:30, Corona Centennial (7-4) vs. Ft. Lauderdale Calvary Christian (6-1); 9, Playa del Rey St. Bernard (5-0) vs. Ross (NorCal) Branson (5-1).

(Ball Dawgs/auxiliary gym) Noon, Valencia West Ranch (5-3) vs. Orem (UT/4-1); 4:30, Lynwood (6-2) vs. Las Vegas Mojave (7-2); 9, Redondo Union (6-1) vs. Oakland Bishop O’Dowd (2-1).

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
