LONG BEACH — Two hundred-plus players, from 13 states and Canada, were on hand at McBride High Saturday afternoon for the start of the two-day, 20th annual Pangos All-West Frosh/Soph boys’ basketball camp.
And the event had plenty of what passes for “star power”, relative to the regional and national classes of 2026.
*Tyran Stokes (Napa Prolific Prep) and Brandon McCoy Jr. (St. John Bosco), teammates on the USA 16U national team last summer, were too skilled, too quick, and too bouncy for their competition Saturday afternoon.
They are elements in pretty much any “Top 5” national rating for the current national sophomore class.
And 6-foot-3 Julius Price — who helped Santa Maria St. Joseph rep the north in the California Open Division title game against Harvard-Westlake in Sacramento last March — was every bit as impressive Saturday, largely via as “pure” and accurate a jump shot as you’ll find anywhere in high school hoops.
Some of the national “gurus” from the websites that seem to carry a whole of weight on the topic haven’t yet got caught as to how good Price is.
The camp is also well-represented by multiple eighth graders.
Look for a more in-depth wrap after Sunday morning final camp games and the afternoon Top 30 and Top 60 all-star clashes.
For a couple of other guys, I’ll mention before I hop in my Prius and hit a couple of SoCal’s freeways, Long Beach-bound:
Santa Margarita sophomore forward Drew Anderson and Brayden Kyman (pictured, left to right) were nothing short of terrific in each of their camp games Saturday and are locks to be in the Top 30 all-star clash.
FYI: All the camp action is being live-streamed and archived by BallerTV.
