LONG BEACH — St. John Bosco High sophomore Brandon McCoy Jr. capped a superb two days of action Sunday afternoon, scoring 25 points to pace the white jerseys to a 120-115 victory in the Top 25 Cream of the Crop all-star game that wrapped up the 20th Pangos All-West Frosh/Soph Camp at McBride High.
That performance probably was the final nudge that gave him the camp’s overall Most Outstanding Player designation over Tyran Stokes (Napa Prolific Prep), a camp teammate — “San Jose State” — cohort from the USA 16U team last summer.
Stokes, who gained a lot of regional and national notoriety two years ago as an eighth grader in the same gym in a couple of Pangos-fronted events, had his dynamic combination of athletic and basketball gifts on display for the dark jerseys in the Top 25 game while scoring 24 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
McCoy (pictured) closed his freshman season in spectacular fashion with the Braves while helping them get to the CIF Southern Section Open final in the Honda Center and State Regional Open semifinals.
With the likes of juniors Elzie Harrington (the BurlisonOnBasketball SoCal Sophomore of the Year last season) and Kade Bonam, and senior Jack Turner also among the returnees, McCoy and his buddies are the clear-cut top challenger for defending champion Harvard-Westlake in the CIF SS Open competition this season.
Some notables joining McCoy and Stokes on a deep list of camp standouts over both days included sophomores Brayden Kyman, Elias Obenyah and Miles Sadler.
Kyman hit four 3s en route to his 16-point effort for the winning squad in the Top 25 game while Sadler (originally from Ontario in Canada) dazzled with his speed, handling, and passing for the black jerseys in the game.
And Obenyah continued his marvelous June-to-fall run, scoring 23 for the dark jerseys in the Top 25 clash just a couple of hours after going for 34 in “Utah State’s” 121-88 win over the Stokes- and McCoy-led “San Jose State” team in a camp “league game” Sunday morning,
McBride was the first stop on the four-camp Pangos “regional” Frosh/Soph tour this fall.
All the West camp’s games (including the all-star clashes) were live-streamed and archived by BallerTV.
