Harvard-Westlake was led by a terrific junior guard

LAGUNA NIGUEL – That Coach David Rebibo’s Harvard-Westlake basketball team was able to win Southern Regional and State Open Division championships speaks to the Wolverines playing their best during the most significant portion of the 2022-23 season.

And no one better illustrates that point than Trent Perry.

The 6-foot-4 playmaker averaged 16 points, seven rebounds and six assists per game during the HW program-best, 33-2 campaign.

But over the team’s final three games – regional games at St. John Bosco and Corona Centennial, in the state championship game  vs. St. Joseph of Santa – Perry averaged 19.0 points, 7.3 assists and 7.2 rebounds.

Perry (pictured) was the Most Valuable Player of the Mission League – which also included the likes of State Division I champion Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks and Regional Division I runner-up Sierra Canyon.

And he’s the choice as the BurlisonOnBasketball Southern California Junior of the Year.

My Top 40 (broken down by groups of five) all-SoCal Junior selections follow.

Be aware:

  1. Each team’s selections are listed backcourt (BC/guards) or frontcourt (FC/forwards, posts, or “wings”), and listed alphabetically.
  2. Players were only eligible if they started most of the season.
  3. And these choices were based upon on-court performances – not “college” or “long-term (professional)” If the latter were the cases, these selections would have a significantly different look.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
