Tuesday’s CIF Southern Section boy’s playoff includes six rematches of regular season meetings:
*Sherman Oaks Notre Dame at Corona Centennial (Open Division pool game). The hosts (and top seed) Huskies knocked off the Knights, 69-60, at Cerritos College on Jan 7.
Since the teams won their Friday openers (Notre Dame, at Bishop Montgomery , 71-63, and Centennial, at home vs. Sierra Canyon, 68-63), the winner of the rematch will be in the proverbial – cliché alert – driver’s seat to win the pool and play in the Feb. 25 championship game at the Honda Center.
*The Mater Dei at Heritage Christian Division 1 quarterfinal pits team that played in Santa Ana on Dec. 16 with host Mater Dei prevailing, 65-58.
Each team was sharp in the first two rounds, the Warriors knocking off No. 7 seed Foothill on the road (59-51) and Roosevelt at home (55-39), with Mater Dei handling Long Beach Poly and Crean Lutheran by 27 points apiece in Santa Ana.
*No. 2 Windward is at Culver City in a 2AA quarterfinal. The teams played at Windward on Dec. 20, with the visiting Centaurs winning, 68-66.
*Bonita (which toppled top-ranked Paraclete Saturday afternoon, 61-52) visits near-by San Dimas (their campuses are separated by only four miles) in a 3A quarterfinal.
The teams played at Bonita on Dec. 5, with the visiting Saints prevailing, 73-69.
*On Jan. 16, St. Pius X/St. Matthias edged, Hesperia, 64-62.
Tuesday, in a 3AA quarterfinal, the top-ranked Warriors, led by terrific junior Tyrone Riley (pictured), play host to . . . the same Hesperia team.
*And, in a 4AA quarterfinal, St. Bonaventure travels to La Canada to play No. 2 seed Flintridge Prep.
That’s the team that St. Bonaventure in Ventura on Dec. 6, 58-52.,
Other playoff nuggets:
*Twenty-nine teams from the Classic at Damien are still competing in the Southern Section and L.A. City playoffs.
And there will be six games Tuesday night pitting teams that were part of the Classic field: St. Bernard at West Ranch (Open); Etiwanda at. St. Paul (D-1); Rancho Christian at Aquinas (2A); Orange Lutheran at Rancho Cucamonga (2AA); Bonita at San Dimas (3A); and Hesperia at St. Pius X/St. Matthias (3AA).
Seven of the eight Southern Section teams that were part of the 16-team, Platinum Division (Harvard-Westlake, St. Bernard, West Ranch, Etiwanda, Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, Rancho Christian, and Anaheim Canyon), are still in the hunt for championships.
