SAN DIEGO – Six-foot-four J.J. Bartelloni is one of the best of the “unsigned/non-committed) seniors in Southern California.

As to remind folks – and college coaches – of that, he put all those shooting skills on display Saturday evening for his Torrey Pines High team during the Battle at the Bay at Mission Bay High.

Bartelloni (pictured) hist six 3s in the first half, and seven overall, in route to a 32-point performance that helped the Falcons improve to 18-8 while toppling San Diego, 62-54, in one of the seven games played during the event.

Eleven of the 14 teams that participated are among the top 16 teams in the San Diego Section.

There was one team from outside the San Diego Section that participated, as Rancho Christian (which is the top seed in the CIF Southern Section 2A playoff bracket) pulled away in the final five minutes to knock off La Costa Canyon, 70-62.

Seniors Kevin Patton (23), Rodney Brown (22) and Kollen Murphy (17) combined for 62 of the Eagles’ points.

They’ll take a 18-10 record into their playoff opener Friday night.

In the other games Saturday:

*Mission Bay 44, Mission Hills 35: Junior forward Charlie Hutchison for the host Buccaneers (19-7).

*Lincoln 53, Oceanside El Camino 48: The Hornets got 21 points from 6-4 junior guard Kyelin King to win their 14th game in a row and improve to 23-2. Another junior guard, Euan Davis, scored 16 points for the 17-9 Wildcats.

*Santa Fe Christian 70, Montgomery 69: The lead changed hands four times in the final minute – three of those in the closing 30 seconds – before guard Greyson Mundis’ twisting layup in traffic was converted at the buzzer to decide the game’s outcome. Forward J.J. Sanchez – one of four sophomores starting for Montgomery – hid a mid-range jumper to put Montgomery up by a point with six seconds to go before Mundis took an inbound pass and got his shot off a milli-second before the buzzer. Sanchez led Montgomery (22-4) with 24 points, the same number scored by senior Drew Bickley and junior Brycen MacKenzie scored for SFC (24-4).

*Otay Rancho 72, Hoover 67 (2OT): Senior guard Keoni Enriquez had 18 points and 11 rebounds as the Mustangs need eight extra minutes to go 17-10.

*Scripps Ranch 72, Del Norte 50: With six-three junior Kai Brown leading the way (22 points), the Falcons had few problems in improving to 15-10.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
