ONTARIO, CA – The annual State Preview Classic, presented by SBLive, and held at Colony High, is set for Saturday with a nine-game schedule, featuring some of the region’s top boys’ basketball teams.

Three teams from among the first 12 in the BurlisonOnBasketball Top 25 – and three more in that group – are among those in the field.

Games are set to get underway at 9 o’clock in the morning, when No. 24 San Pedro Rolling Hills (the event is the brainchild of RHP Coach Harvey Kitani) faces Hacienda Heights Los Altos.

No. 2 Harvard-Westlake (21-1 before its home Mission League game with No. 6 Sierra Canyon Friday night) takes on Rancho Verde and its 6-10 Houston-bound center Jacob McFarland at 7:30 p.m. – ninety minutes before another Mission League team, No. 11 Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, is challenged by Northern California’s top-ranked team, 17-1 San Ramon Dougherty Valley.

And, in an Orange County tussle, No. 12 Mater Dei  takes on No. 23 Crean Lutheran. Each team has multiple outstanding freshmen.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
