LAGUNA NIGUEL – Ten of the teams in the newest version of the BurlisonOnBasketball Southern California Top 25 are set to participate in Friday-Saturday, 28th version of the Nike Extravaganza at Mater Dei High in Santa Ana.

Noteworthy among those are No.’s 1 Centennial, 2 Harvard-Westlake and 4 West Ranch.

Those teams are a combined 66-5 and already locked into the CIF Southern Section’s Open Division playoff field of eight, competition for which is set to begin on Feb. 10.

The first of the 16 Extravaganza games, St. Margaret’s vs. Palm Springs, is set to tip off Friday afternoon at 3 o’clock.

One of those games is the Friday night (7:30) girls’ contest between the host Monarchs and Esperanza.

Saturday’s 11-game schedule begins at 8 a.m. – rise and freakin’ shine, hoop heads – when Servite takes on Los Alamitos.

And the near-13 hours (barring any overtimes) of hoop-di-do close with the conclusion of the 9 p.m. game between defending California State Open champion Centennial and Liberty of Henderson in Nevada – led by the top junior point guard in the country, 6-foot-1 Dedan Thomas Jr.

In other key games in this, the second-to-last week of regular season, No. 11 visits Bellflower to take on No. 5 St. John Bosco Wednesday night in the Trinity League.

The host Braves are 5-0 in league, including the first win by a league foe on Mater Dei’s home court in 25 years (Jan. 6, 67-64).

And, on Friday night, No. 8 Sherman Oaks Notre Dame plays “host” to No. 9 Sierra Canyon in UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion (Notre Dame is renting the facility for the game, reportedly in hopes of using it as a “fund-raiser”).

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
