DUNCANVILLE, TX – Seven states were represented among my choices for the Top 15 performers during the two-day Pangos All-South Frosh/Soph at wrapped up mid-October 2 afternoon in the Duncanville Fieldhouse.
Six-foot-seven freshman Phoenix Woodson (pictured) – selected as the event’s overall Most Outstanding Player – was one of four Oklahoma-based athletes chosen to the camp’s Top 30 Cream of the Crop All-Star Game.
And he was joined on the list of the players that most impressed me on Saturday and Sunday by another Oklahoma freshmen, 6-6 Jalen Montonati.
Montonati, a teammate of Woodson’s on Team (Blake) Griffin 14s’ squad on the EYBL spring and summer circuit, was selected the Most Valuable Player in the Top 30 game for the team wearing the white jerseys by scoring a game-high 15 points – including his third with 8 seconds to go to put his team up by a point.
Sophomore forward Jed’Ethan Nansha was hammered while attempting a go-ahead shot just before the buzzer for the black jerseys.
After .2 of a second was put on the clock, Nansha attempted the free throw to put the black jerseys back up (since all fouls on shots resulted in a single free throw, if made, giving the team two points).
He missed the shot – badly – but, before the white jerseys could celebrate in earnest, he was called back to the line by the officials because a couple of players in white were called for getting into the lane before he released the ball.
On his next attempt, the ball bounced high off the back iron but fell through the rim and the black jerseys, with the 75-74 victory, were the ones swarming one another with a giddiness rarely seen at the end of camp all-star games.
Sophomore guard Jason Scott scored a team-high 13 points to bag MVP for the black jerseys while Woodson added 10 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Another sophomore guard, Camden Cowgill, added 11 points for the white jerseys with nine of those coming from behind the arc.
My selections for the list that follows are based upon how on the athletes played when I watched them, and not strictly on “next-level potential”.
