Wisconsin well-repped at Pangos Frosh/Soph Camp

LA GRANGE, IL – It’s billed as the Pangos All-Midwest Frosh/Soph Camp.

And this version of the event, which wrapped up Sunday afternoon in the Park District Athletic Facility the Chicago suburb of La Grange, delivered the goods for the high school classes of 2025 and ’26.

And Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin more than held up its end of the “Midwest” part of the equation.

Those teams combined to land 14 spots on the 30-player Crème of the Crop All-Star Game.

The Badger State’s five reps included the athlete who bagged the camp’s overall “Most Outstanding Player” tag, 6-foot-6 sophomore Xzavion Mitchell (North High in Oshkosh).

Mitchell (pictured) got the nod – by the five people who participated in the selection process, myself included – in an extremely tight process over the likes of fellow 2025 members Jayden Savoury, Devin Brown, Juan Guerrero-Hernandez and Damon Friery, and freshman E.J. Hazelett – the latter being, perhaps, the top “prospect” in the camp.

Mitchell’s non-stop energy, focus and impact – at both ends of the floor – finally pushed the discussion in his favor.

Brown did pick up Most Outstanding Player (with 20 points and 10 rebounds) for the dark jerseys in their 81-72 loss to the team wearing white jerseys, 81-72.

Freshman point guard Rykan Woo (Chicago Whitney Young), who had 14 points, was the MOP for the white jerseys.

My choices for the Top 15 “performers” in the camp follow.

My selections for the list are based upon how on the athletes played when I watched them, and not strictly on “next-level potential”.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
