SANTA ANA, Ca. – The Valley Christian and Rolling Hills Prep high teams pulled out down-to-the-wire victories in the first two games played Friday during the first day of the 27th Mater Dei/Nike Extravaganza in the on-campus Meruelo Athletic Center.
*Senior guard Nathan Medina hit a turn-around, 21-footer from the top of the key with 4.9 seconds to go to give Valley Christian its 63-60 victory over St. Margaret’s.
Sophomore guard Jacob Bayla led the Defenders with 26 points and three steals while another sophomore guard, Russell Frye, scored 20 with six assists for the Tartans.
*The Rolling Hills Prep Titans, trailing by eight points in the fourth quarter, went ahead to stay on two free throws by junior forward Kenny Manzi with 25.4 seconds to go to pull out the 55-53 win over Capistrano Valley Christian and improve to 17-1.
The Eagles hurt their chances by missing 11 of 18 free throws, including the front end of a 1-and-1 with 3.9 seconds remaining that could have given CVC the mild upset.
In the other boys’ games Friday, Las Vegas Durango knocked off Etiwanda (58-54), behind sophomore Taj Degourville’s 30 points; Orange Lutheran cruised past Taft, 66-54; and the host Monarchs toppled Servite, 78-39.
