DUNCANVILLE, TX – Trailing by three points, the team wearing the white jerseys had the ideal player launching jump shots to try to tie the score in the final minute of the Pangos All-South Frosh/Soph Camp Top 30 Cream of the Crop all-star affair Sunday afternoon.
But Parker Jefferson, a 6-foot-8 freshman from Waxahachie High (in the southern reaches of the Dallas-Fort Worth region), missed three shots from behind the arc – two of which rimmed in and out – and the black jersey-wearing crew prevailed, 54-51, wrapping up the two-day event held at the Duncanville Fieldhouse.
It didn’t take but a couple of minutes into his first camp Saturday afternoon – with “Texas A&M” – for Jefferson (pictured) to demonstrate that he was going to be among the among the very best among the 230 or so players in the event.
And there was no letup by Jefferson over his final three games, including the Cream of the Crop clash which led all scorers with 16 points by way of his slick low-post skill, jump shot and speed and bounce to the glass.
Six-six sophomore Tre Johnson shared camp Most Outstanding Player honors with Jefferson, who also was the white jerseys’ MVP.
Brothers Israel (a 6-9 sophomore) and Jed Nansha (a 6-8 freshman), from Dallas Hillcrest, shared MVP for the winning team after combining for eight points and 11 rebounds.
Six-three freshman Jaden Nickens (Oklahoma City Millwood), after scoring 18 points while leading the white jerseys to a 79-34 victory, was the MVP in the Top 60 game.
Nickens, along with Cedric Dixon (Tulsa Union), Jayden Gambrell (Houston James Madison) and Johnathan Price (Coppell, TX, Universal Academy), was among the players who got significant consideration as my choices for the top 15 performers over the weekend.
The Top 15 players are listed in order of position (point guard; shooting guard; small forward; power forward; and center) and were selected because of how well they played when I watched them and NOT strictly upon college “potential”.
