DUNCANVILLE, TX – A couple of kids from Oklahoma who were Top 30 Crème of the Crop selections at the Pangos All-South Frosh/Soph Camp in 2020 were on hand for Saturday’s first day of the 2021 version of the event.
And it shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone who watched them in the Duncanville Fieldhouse a year ago that Dalen Fuller and Carl’sheon Young were among the most impressive of the approximately 230 players on hand Saturday in the same building for the opening action in the second of four stops on the Pangos Frosh/Soph national circuit.
Fuller (Tulsa Union) and Young (the only 8th grader in the top all-star game in 2020, he’s now a freshman at Putnam City West in Oklahoma City) looked to be among the best in the respective classes of 2024 and ’25 a year ago, both regionally and nationally.
And the left-handers, both in the 6-foot-4 range, seemed firmly on the same career paths with their play in two camp games apiece (for UTEP and North Texas, respectively) Saturday.
Another familiar name among the Saturday standouts was “Blocker”.
A year ago, Class of 2023 point guard Layden Blocker (from Little Rock Christian) had a dynamic debut on the “national” scene with his ability to get into the lane at multiple speeds and make plays for himself and teammates – and, especially, with his get-into-your-grill, on-ball defense.
Blocker, after a Top 30 all-star performance at the June Pangos All-American Camp in Las Vegas and standout July Peach Jam effort with the Bradley Beal Elite 16s squad, is now attending Sunrise Academy in Bel Aire, KS.
But the Blocker “name” was still repped in fine fashion at the camp Saturday by way of Layden’s younger brother, Landren.
And it would be a misnomer to refer to him as Layden’s “little” brother since Landren (pictured) is more than an inch taller at about 6-4.
Landren (a sophomore at Little Rock Christian) spent most of his two games with Mississippi (aka “Ole Miss”) Saturday in angry assaults on the rims and defenders who stood in his way to the lane.
Three other players who did a lot of rim-crunching Saturday were 6-9 sophomore Jamie Vinson (St. Michael’s Catholic Academy in Austin) and freshmen Hudson Greer (6-5/Austin Lake Travis) and Ashton Magee (6-6/Ellisville, MS, South Jones).
Camp action resumes Sunday morning at 9, with each of the 24 teams playing once before Top 60 and Top 30 all-star clashes are played at 1:15 and 2:15, respectively, in the afternoon.
All camp games (include all-star action) are live-streamed and archived by BallerTV.
