LAS VEGAS – The 19th Pangos All-American Camp wrapped up late Tuesday afternoon with the announcement that was a near-foregone conclusion after the first session of games Sunday night:

Six-foot-10 Jalen Duren, from Philadelphia by way of Montverde Academy in Florida, was selected the event’s Most Outstanding Player.

The consensus No. 1 player in the national Class of 2022 – who, some believe, could “reclassify” to 2021 later this summer and enroll in college in September and play as a freshman – was just one of a large group of quality “big” prospects among the 106 players who participated.

The on-court festivities were capped with the Top 30 Crème of the Crop game, in which Duren’s red jersey-team prevailed over its blue counterpart, 130-99.

Despite a throbbing knee, Duren played a couple of five-minute sessions in the game but didn’t display his vertical power, scoring just a layup but showing off his unselfishness and under-appreciated passing skill with five assists.

Slender (he’s, maybe, 205 pounds) 6-10 Baye Fall (Denver Prep), the top player from the Class of 2023 in the event, scored 20 points with six rebounds and two blocked shots to pick up game Most Outstanding honors for the winners.

Another junior-to-be, 6-8 J.J. Taylor (Chicago Kenwood Academy), scored 15 points to bag MOP for the blue jerseys.

Here are my choices for the Top 25 Camp Performers, based upon how they played during the games I watched and not strictly on “potential”:

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
