Just another title for the Centennial Crew

PHOENIX – A little more than two weeks after winning the CIF Southern Section’s Open Division title, the Corona Centennial basketball team reminded everyone watching why its also going to the “chased” in Southern California – and beyond – during the 2021-22 season.

Coach Josh Gilles’ Huskies rolled to four victories this past weekend at Brophy Prep College School during the second session of the Section 7 Tournament Camp.

With the same starting lineup used during the 21-2 “2021 season” that concluded with the June 11, 80-72 victory at defending champion Sierra Canyon, the Huskies scored decisive wins against Studio City Harvard-Westlake (65-41) in the West Bracket final and vs. East winner American Fork of Utah, 77-72, for the overall title.

Harvard-Westlake knocked off a Kylan Boswell-less Centennial (he was in Houston for the USA BB 16-U trails) in the first round of Southern Section Open pool play.

The Wolverines (minus graduated seniors Truman Gettings and Adam Hinton) hung tight for the bulk of the first half before the Huskies spurted over the final minutes to go up, 33-20, at intermission.

The 6-foot-2 Boswell scored 12 of his 16 points after intermission while fellow Class of 2023 guard Jared McCain hit four 3s for 12 of his game-high 19 points.

Another junior-to-be, forward Aaron McBride, added 13 points for Gilles’ crew.

Junior center Jacob Huggins and sophomore guard Trent Perry scored 10 points apiece for the Wolverines of Coach David Rebibo, with Huggins grabbing eight rebounds.

Boswell (pictured) scored 25 points, including five 3s, with four assists and four rebounds in the win over American Fork.

Over the two games, Boswell was 16 of 25 from the field.

Donovan Dent, one of the better guard prospects in the western Class of 2022, added 19 points with four assists and three steals.

Six-10 Devin Williams (one of the four sophomores to start during the “spring regular-season” for Gilles), scored only two points vs. American Fork but grabbed four rebounds and blocked four shots – three of those coming against Jaxon Kohler.

The 6-9 Kohler kept the Cavemen (yeah; it’s the school athletic mascot/nickname) with 26 points (10 of 19 from the field and perfect on six free throws) and 13 rebounds.

The Huskies were 4-0 and the Wolverines 3-1 in the 195-team first Section 7 Team Camp session two weekends ago that was held on the Phoenix Cardinals stadium floor.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
