LAS VEGAS – Day II of the 19th Pangos All-American Camp was – like the opening of the camp Sunday evening – a showcase for the best-ever depth of quality “bigs” in the camp’s history.
But the 12 games played across Monday’s two sessions also illustrated how many upper-tier jump shooters were on hand among the 100-plus players competing in the three-day event in the Tarkanian Academy in front of dozens of NBA employees and “scout” and “media-types”.
Among those who impressed me during the four games played on Court 1 that I honed in on were:
*Noah Shelby (pictured/Addison, TX, Greenhill School) he was equal parts superb playmaker and jump shooter during Virginia’s 75-74 win over North Carolina, hitting deep shots after the catch and dribble while never forcing anything while overtly contested.
*Collin Chandler (Farmington, UT), like Shelby, put all of his expansive skills on display in the aforementioned game, hitting deep jumpers in transition while, at 6-foot-4, also sprinting by defenders and exploding to the rim for finishes for North Carolina.
*Mark Armstrong (Jersey City St. Peter’s Prep) and Arterio Morris (Dallas Kimball) Armstrong (UCLA) and Morris (USC) had their own version of L.A.’s cross-town rivalry during USC’s 85-65 victory. Morris knocked in a lot of attempts from deep while Armstrong was more mid-range or just short of the arc as his emphasis Monday afternoon.
*Oziyah Sellers (Southern California Academy) and his Florida State teammates were smacked by Syracuse (104-79) but Sellers kept things from getting absurdly out of hand, hitting – by my count – at least six 3s, mostly off the catch. His SCA teammates, Varick Lewis and Jaylen Thompson, also had strong two-day efforts.
*Austin Nunez (Garden Ridge, TX, Wagner) and Robert Jones Jr. (Plano, TX, John Paul II) took turns displaying their ways of getting off – and knocking in – jumpers while Nunez’ Arizona team toppled Jones’ Oregon squad, 83-65, during the final set of games Monday night. The left-handed Nunez was oh-so-smooth on his delivery while fellow Texan Jones did most of his damage exploding into his jumpers off the dribble. Each also turned down quality looks to get the ball to teammates for layups.
