LAGUNA NIGUEL, Ca. – The Corona Centennial High Huskies – with a starting lineup of four sophomores and a junior – sit atop seven other CIF Southern Section Open Division playoffs teams in the final BurlisonOnBasketball “15 for 2021” ratings.

Coach Josh Giles’ team – which opted out of the State Southern Regional Open playoffs in order to play in front of 100s of college coaches in last weekend’s Section 7 event in Phoenix – knocked off host and defending champion Sierra Canyon in the Section final on June 10.

Etiwanda, which moved into the No. 3 seed (behind No. 1 and then-unbeaten Torrey Pines of San Diego and Sierra Canyon), is at No. 2 after toppling Mater Dei (No. 6 in the final poll), Sierra Canyon (3) and Torrey Pines – the latter two on the road – to capture the Regional Open crown.

The Eagles lost to Sierra Canyon in Southern Section Open pool play and didn’t hook up with Centennial during the season.

Northern California didn’t hold regional play – hence, there were no state championship games.

Heading the “non-SS Open teams” in the ratings was Capistrano Valley, which was the runner-up in the Southern Section Division I and Southern Regional Division I events.

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
