The 2021 CIF Southern Section Boys’ Basketball Open Division playoff field looks a whole lot like its 2019-20 counterpart.

And that starts at the top, where two-time defending champion Sierra Canyon (12-0) and Corona Centennial (18-1) are again the respective 1 and 2 seeds, with the Trailblazers atop Pool “A” and the Huskies topping Pool “B”.

Also returning to the Open Division Playoffs are No. 3 seed Mater Dei (26-1), 4 Etiwanda (9-1), 7 Harvard-Westlake (15-3) and 8 St. John Bosco (19-2).

Joining Open action for the first time are No. 5 Ribet Academy (10-1) and 6 Damien (26-2).

Action is set to begin on Friday night at 7.

Opening-round play will have St. John Bosco visiting Sierra Canyon (in a repeat of last year) and Etiwanda playing host to Ribet Academy in the A pool.

In Pool B, Centennial is at home to Harvard-Westlake and Damien visits Mater Dei.

The second games (Ribet Academy at Sierra Canyon; St. John Bosco at Etiwanda; Harvard-Westlake at Mater Dei and Damien at Centennial) are scheduled for June 1, with the final-round of pool action (Etiwanda at Sierra Canyon; St. John Bosco at Ribet Academy; Harvard-Westlake at Damien and Mater Dei Centennial) following three nights later.

The championship game is schedule for June 11, at the home site of the highest remaining seed.

Because of the Saturday afternoon game played between Heritage Christian and Sierra Canyon (won by the Trailblazers), multiple playoff field and seedings were prepared by the Southern Section’s Open Committee on Friday afternoon.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
