Peat heads first-day standouts at Pangos Camp

ST. GEORGE, Utah – Arizona was well-represented Saturday during the opening day action of the 10th annual Pangos Middle School All-American Camp in the Nets on Fire facility.

And none repped the state better than did Koa Peat, who was easily the most dominant “big” player on hand Saturday.

Peat, who attends Aprende Middle School in Chandler, is listed as standing 6-foot-6.

But he’s likely to be a lot closer to 6-9 than 6-6 at some point in what has a chance to be a spectacular high school career.

Approximately 150 players, from 19 states, participated on 18 camp squads.

Alumni from the camp’s first nine sessions includes multiple NBA players, notably D’Andre Ayton of the Phoenix Suns, Melo Ball of the Charlotte Hornets and Onyeka Okongwu of the Atlanta Hawks, and projected 2021 players such as Evan Mobley, Jalen Green, Moses Moody and Josh Christopher.

Peat (pictured) was near-impossible to contain, from both the low post and perimeter, while playing two games for the “Arizona” team Saturday.

Competition resumes Sunday at 9 a.m. (MT) and wraps up with a set of all-star games that are set to tip at 12:30 p.m.

All games are streamed lived and archived by Baller TV.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
