LAGUNA NIGUEL, Ca. – To the surprise of no one who paid close attention – even before the start of the seasons – the Gonzaga Bulldogs were proved easily the elite team in college hoops in the 2020 portion of the 2020-21 season.
Coach Mark Few’s club rolled to victories over the No.’s 3 (Kansas), 7 (Iowa) and 10 (West Virginia) teams in the BurlisonOnBasketball “mid-season Top 16”, along while also cruising pass a University of Virginia squad that may be the best in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
The Bulldogs’ clash with No. 2 Baylor, set for Dec. 5 in Indianapolis was postponed because of COVID-19 issues and doesn’t seem likely to be re-scheduled.
But, of course, the teams could hook up during the April 3&5 Final Four, also in Indy.
Easily the two best conferences over the first six weeks or so of the season were the Big Ten and Big 12, which put four teams apiece in the Top 16.
Noticeably missing from the Top 16 are any teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference and the University of Kentucky Wildcats, who’ve gotten off to a 1-6 start with their only victory against 4-6 Morehead State in its opener.
Notable games set for Jan. 2 (Saturday) include No. 8 Texas at No. 3 Kansas in a Big 12 clash.
