Future USC guard among Saturday All-West Camp standouts

ST. GEORGE, Utah – Reese Dixon-Waters, a 6-foot-5 senior at St. Bernard High (Playa del Rey, CA) who committed to USC nearly six months ago, was among the first-day standouts Saturday during the Full-Court Press All-West Camp.

Approximately 240 players – mostly from western states but including players from throughout the country – were on hand for the event, which wraps up with 12 Sunday morning “camp games” followed by three all-star games in the afternoon.

All games will be live-streamed and archived on BallerTV.

A.J. Storr, a junior at Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) and summer transplant from Kankakee in Illinois, also scored about as easily (via jump shots and drives) as did Dixon-Waters when I watched.

I saw a several notable individual match-ups, of sorts, Saturday evening.

Among those involved posts Joshua Jefferson (a junior at Liberty in Henderson, NV, playing for the “USC” camp team) and Mouhamed Mbaye (a senior at Colorado Prep in Aurora and a member of the Oregon camp squad).

Another of those involved point guards Devon Barnes (a senior at St. Frances in Baltimore) and Milos Uzan (a junior at Las Vegas Desert Pine). Barnes’ Colorado team prevailed over Uzan’s Washington club, 95-84.

Joining Storr, Jefferson and Uzan among the most impressive Class of 2022 members I watched Saturday night was 6-4 Collin Chandler, who averaged 18 points and five assists per game as a sophomore at Farmington High in Utah.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
