HAYWARD, Ca. – Cole Anderson’s clinching layup in the closing seconds secured the Class of 2021’s 117-113 victory over its 2022 counterpart Sunday evening at the Slam Academy during the NorCal Clash.

Anderson’s left-handed layup was set up by a steal and pass from 6-foot-9 DeMarshay Johnson (Richmond Salesian).

The 6-3 Anderson (Clovis West), who committed to UC Santa Barbara in the spring, continued to show why he may be as good a jump shooter as there is – not only in California but pretty much anywhere else, too, on the high school level.

Anderson (pictured), en route to his 28-point effort, hit 10 of 12 shots from the field (including four 3s) and also chipped in with seven assists.

The seniors squad also got strong efforts from the likes of Marsalis Roberson (Oakland Bishop O’Dowd), (D.J. Johnson (Hayward Moreau Catholic) and the San Jose duo of Mike Mitchell (Mitty) and Ryan Kiachian (Bellarmine Prep), which combined for 69 points.

Mitchell (Pepperdine) and Kiachian (Cornell) have already committed to the universities they plan to attend in 2021-22.

The juniors, who trailed by 11 points at intermission (the game was played with 10-minute quarters instead of the traditional eight), got a combined 46 points from 6-4 Austin Johnson (Salesian) and 6-6 Chris Bunch (Concord De La Salle).

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
