LAGUNA NIGUEL – The second round of pool play in the Open Division, as well as quarterfinals in most of the other CIF Southern Section boys’ basketball playoff divisions, are on tap for Tuesday evening.

Notable games include (all tipping at 7 o’clock, unless noted):

*The four Open Division clashes include one in which both squads won Friday opening games.

No. 7 seed Mater Dei (which knocked off host and 2 seed Corona Centennial on the road Friday) takes on No. 3 Rancho Christian in a game that has been moved to Great Oak High in Temecula (the same city Rancho Christian is located).

The winner will be just a road victory away (Mater Dei at Harvard Westlake; Rancho Christian at Centennial) Friday night from representing the B Pool in the Feb. 28 championship game at Long Beach State.

The A Pool winners from the first round, No. 1 Sierra Canyon and No. 4 Etiwanda, play host to No. 5 St. Anthony and No. 8 St. John Bosco, respectively – with Cal State Northridge serving as the “home court” for Sierra Canyon.

The fourth Open contest has No. 6 Harvard-Westlake at Centennial.

*The most “compelling” of the other sectional playoffs (it must be, right, since I plan to attend?) finds No. 1 Windward visiting No. 8 Mayfair in Lakewood in a Division I clash set to tip off at 7:30 (to accommodate KDOC, which is telecasting the game).

The host Monsoons (17-11) earned the Tuesday night game by edging Beverly Hills Friday, 66-65.

Mayfair, which won the SS 2AA title a year ago, is led by one of the four Southern California players selected to the McDonald’ All-American team last month, 6-foot-4 Josh Christopher (pictured).

The Wildcats (23-7), who lost to Chino Hills in the Division 1 semifinals in 2019, are led by 6-foot-5, UNLV-bound Devin Tillis.

Other top seeds’ schedules: 2AA (Santa Clarita Christian, home to Fairmont Prep); 2A (Ribet Academy, which takes on visiting Peninsula); 3AA (Providence, home to La Serna); 3A (Village Christian, entertaining Price); 4AA (Renaissance Academy, traveling to Jurupa Valley); 4A (Oakwood, taking on visiting Whittier); 5AA (Valley Torah travels to Bassett); and, in 5A (Linfield Christian at Banning).

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
