LAGUNA NIGUEL – Twenty-five teams that played in December’s fourth The Classic at Damien are still in contention for CIF Southern Section or L.A. City Section championships.

Notable among those are the squads in the Southern Section (Sierra Canyon, Rancho Christian, Etiwanda and St John Bosco) and L.A. City (Fairfax, King-Drew, Birmingham and Washington Prep) eight-team Open playoffs.

In Tuesday Southern Section action, there will be three “all-Classic at Damien” matchups: St. John Bosco at Etiwanda (Open/Pool A game); Valencia at Damien (D-1 quarterfinal) and Heritage Christian at St. Francis (2AA quarterfinal).

Fairfax and Birmingham, both of which were in the Classic’s Platinum Division, meet in an L.A. City Open semifinal Saturday night (8) at L.A. Southwest College.

L.A. City and Southern Section divisional top seeds from the Classic at Damien are Fairfax (City Open); Sierra Canyon (SS Open); Windward (SS D-1); Santa Clarita Christian (SS 2AA); Ribet Academy (SS 2A); and Village Christian (SS 3A).

Each of the L.A. City and SS Open teams (eight in each) are guaranteed spots in the State Southern Regional competition, brackets for which will be unveiled on March 1.

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
