Saints take advantage of “Open” opportunity

LONG BEACH – It was a game with significant CIF Southern Section Open Division implications.

Translated: The winner of the Del Rey League clash between St. Bernard and host St. Anthony Friday night was going to be a strong candidate to be one of the eight teams in the Open playoff pool when it’s unveiled on Feb. 9.

And, despite spotting the visitors an 8-1 lead, the Saints looked every bit the part of an “Open team” while cruising to an eased-up, 75-60 victory to improve to 25-2 overall and 6-1 in league.

Coach Allen Caveness’ team got double-figure scoring from four players, including Long Beach State-bound Jadon Jones (21 points, including four 3s/pictured) and sophomore post Elijah Price (16 points and 11 rebounds).

It was only the second loss for the Vikings (18-7 overall and 4-2 in league) with senior point guard Nick Bowden (who missed a lot of the season with an ankle injury suffered on Dec. 26 during the Classic at Damien) on the floor.

The Saints trailed, 19-17, after the first quarter but out-scored the Vikings, 44-21, in the middle 16 minutes of the contest.

Freshman guard Darius Carr led St. Bernard with 14 points while juniors Damion McDowell and Reese Dixon-Waters added 13 apiece.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
