COSTA MESA – The La Verne Bonita High Bearcats pushed their record to 28-2 with their 15th consecutive win with their 62-53 victory over host Newport Pacifica Christian in a Wednesday night, CIF Southern Section 2A quarterfinal at Vanguard University.

The No. 4 seed Wildcats of Coach Tim Godley will play host to top seed Ribet Academy in a Friday night semifinal, with the winner advancing to the Feb. 29 divisional championship game.

The Wildcats became the 23rd team (including Ribet Academy) Classic at Damien tournament field from the Southern or L.A. City sections to clinch a spot in the State Southern Regionals.

Five-foot-eight senior Jordan Lopez (pictured) missed his first shot in the fourth quarter but was perfect the rest of the way, scoring 14 of his teams 18 points including the final six points of the contest (a slick left-handed layup in traffic followed by four free throws).

Lopez scored a game-high 26 points (eight of 13 from the field, including a 3, and nine of 10 free throws) while backcourt mate Kobe Hart chipped in with 12.

Six-seven and Saint Mary’s-bound Judah Brown closed his Tritons’ career Wednesday by keeping his team close via 25 points, 10 rebounds and five blocked shots.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
