Nike Extravaganza dominates the prep hoops scene this weekend

SANTA ANA – The 14-game, two-day, 30th Nike Extravaganza tips off Friday afternoon at 3 o’clock at Mater Dei High.

Opening things are the clash between Heritage Christian (No. 13 in this week’s BurlisonOnBasketball Top 25) and Capistrano Valley Christian.

And Saturday night’s 9 o’clock finale is between No. 3 Rancho Christian and Gonzaga from Washington, DC.

Rancho Christian is led by the No. 1 player in the Class of 2020, USC-bound Evan Mobley (pictured).

Gonzaga point guard Chuck Harris (Butler) and forwards Terrence Williams (Michigan) and Myles Stute (Vanderbilt) are committed to Division I college programs.

No. 2-ranked Corona Centennial faces one of Northern California’s better teams, Salesian of Richmond, at 3 o’clock Saturday.

No. 4 Etiwanda takes on one of the better teams in the L.A. City, Westchester, following the Centennial-Salesian clash.

Another game with impact on the CIF Southern Section Open Division playoff field follows at 6, when No. 8 Harvard-Westlake hook up with the one of west’s elite programs, Las Vegas Bishop Gorman.

The host Monarchs play each day, facing Servite (in what is actually a Trinity League game) at 9 Friday night and Chicago Whitney Young at 7:30 Saturday.

 

Friday

3 p.m., Heritage Christian vs. Capistrano Valley Christian; 4:30, Orange Lutheran vs. Rolling Hills Prep; 6, JSerra vs. Chicago Whitney Young; 7:30, (girls) Mater Dei vs. Las Vegas Bishop Gorman; 9, Mater Dei vs. Servite.

Saturday

9 a.m., Mission Viejo vs. Palm Springs; 10:30, Sonora vs. Los Alamitos; Noon, Capistrano Valley vs. St. Augustine; 1:30 p.m., Long Beach Poly vs. Concord de La Salle; 3, Richmond Salesian vs. Corona Centennial; 4:30, Etiwanda vs. Westchester; 6, Bishop Gorman vs. Harvard-Westlake; 7:30, Mater Dei vs. Whitney Young; 9, DC Gonzaga vs. Rancho Christian.
