TORRANCE – Saturday night games pitting Rancho Christian and Santa Clarita Christian, as well as Long Beach Poly and Mayfair, provide the high-profile matchups during the two-day, Winter Real Run Classic at Bishop Montgomery High.

Twelve games are scheduled, beginning with the 4 p.m. clash between Saugus and Santa Fe on Friday and wrapping up with the 9 o’clock showdown Saturday night between Rancho Christian (No. 1 in the latest BurlisonOnBasketball Southern California Top 25) and Santa Clarita Christian (No. 7), which won the Platinum and Gold championships, respectively, Monday night in the Classic at Damien.

Santa Clarita Christian (11-3) handed the Eagles (14-2) their first loss of the season in a Battle Zone semifinal on Dec. 6 at Centennial High in Corona.

The 6 o’clock meeting between Mayfair and Poly features a couple of the best players in the west – regardless of class – in the Monsoon’s 6-foot-4 senior Josh Christopher (pictured) and the Jackrabbits’ 6-6 junior Peyton Watson, respectively.

The other team to beat Rancho Christian, No. 4 Centennial (13-2), plays Lynwood at 3 o’clock.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
