DUNCANVILLE, TX – Texas may be smack dab in the middle of high school football season.
And, by the way, all things football – especially the high school version of the sport – are pretty big in this state.
Friday Night Lights, anyone?
But the two-day Stop No. 2 on the 2019 Pangos All-Regional Frosh/Soph Camps tour
got underway Saturday at the Duncanville Fieldhouse.
Some terrific Texas high school hoops, anyone?
Approximately 220 players, the overwhelming majority of them from Texas and from the high school classes of 2022 and ’23, were on hand to show why the state can go toe to toe – metaphorically and literally — with the likes of California, Illinois and Florida when it comes to high-level prep hoops.
Notable among the in-state standouts from the sophomore (2022) class Saturday were Tre White (6-foot-5/San Antonio Cornerstone Christian), Keyonte George (6-3/Lewisville), Jordan Walsh (6-6/Dallas Faith Family), Dylan Glover (6-4/Bryan), Collin Smith (6-7/Dallas St. Mark’s), Dallas Hobbs (6-1/Dallas Faith Family) and Lee Dort (6-10/Plano North Dallas Adventist).
Dort was the most overpowering “big” on hand Saturday, Glover and Hobbs were among the better point guards, White and Walsh were explosive scorers and George may have been the best prospect in the building.
Some of the better players from outside of the state included freshmen Jazz Gardner (6-9/La Verne, CA, Damien) and Fred Payne (pictured/6-0/Grambling, LA, Lincoln Prep), as well as sophomores Didier Maleng (6-9/Lawton, OK, Christian) and Samuel Murray (6-7/Gulfport, MS, Harrison Central).
Action begins Sunday at 9:15 a.m. with four sets of three games apiece (spread over three courts among the camp’s 24 teams), and all-star games (Top 60 and Top 30) tipping at 1:15 and 2:15, respectively, to wrap things up.
All games are live-streamed and archived by BallerTV.
