COLORADO SPRINGS – The heaviest concentration of high school talent in one place for the foreseeable future is in town for the annual USA Basketball Junior National Team October Minicamp.
Approximately 80 players – spread across all of the high school grade levels – were spread across eight teams, with drills beginning Friday morning and drills continuing, with some scrimmaging, taking place in the evening in the USA Olympic Training Centers two basketball facilities.
Twenty-one of those athletes are members of the Class of 2020 (seniors), notable among those being the consensus No. 1 player in the class in 7-foot Evan Mobley (Rancho Christian in Temecula, CA), who is committed to the University of Southern California.
Others in the class here included 6-6 Jabri Abdur-Rahim (Blair Academy in New Jersey), who’s committed to national champion Virginia; two players committed to North Carolina, 6-10 Day’Ron Sharpe (PICTURED/Montverde Academy in Florida) and 6-3 Caleb Love (Christian Brothers in St. Louis); and California stalwarts Josh Christopher (Mayfair High in Lakewood) and Jalen Green (from Fresno but attending playing for Prolific Prep in Napa as a senior).
Standouts during the drills and scrimmaging that I watched Friday night included Love and another like-sized guard, Adam Miller (Chicago Morgan Park), as well as Abdur-Rahim, Mobley and – IMO – the No. 1 junior prospect here, 6-11 Chet Holmgren (Minnehaha Academy in Minneapolis).
Morning (10:30-noon, MT) and evening (4:30-6:30) sessions will be held today, with competition wrapping up with two more sessions on Sunday.
