LYNWOOD – They’re still a couple of months away from making their debuts on the real high school – not club or camp – level of basketball.
But that didn’t prevent a whole bunch of players from the prep class of 2023 from providing a nice glimpse as to what kind of impact they’re going to make this season – and over the course of four seasons.
The Pangos All-West Frosh-Soph Camp, held at Lynwood High, provided the platform and, on Saturday, many of those in the building may have gotten their first looks at most of those guys.
No one came to the event as well-known – social media has seen to that – as is 6-foot-2 Mikey Williams of San Diego’s San Ysidro High and the Compton Magic club program.
Only LeBron James, Jr. (“Bronny” will do just fine”) of Sierra Canyon – he wasn’t in attendance Saturday – is on the same plateau as Williams in that regard and both are, rightfully so, considered among the very best in class.
But two point-guards who have been operating well under the radar – and, in comparison to Williams and James, everyone else in the class is stealth mode – were as dynamic as anyone among the 250 or so players in attendance Saturday.
Kylan Boswell has only been in Southern California for a better part of a month – he relocated from the Chicago area – but, at every stop on the “camp” circuit in August and September, he’s shown he’s going to combine with Brenton Knapper (all-CIF Southern Section as a sophomore) to give Colony one of the region’s top backcourts from Jump Street.
And Mikey Price used his two camp games Saturday night to show off the skill and feel that have him on track to follow London Perrantes, D’Anthony Melton and Brandon Williams as the next high-major college guard from Crespi.
Joining Williams, Boswell and Price Saturday as standout Southland guards from the Class of 2023 were Justin Daniels (PICTURED/Mater Dei) and Dusty Stromer (Notre Dame in Sherman Oaks).
And there 2023 class members from outside of SoCal who dazzled on the first of the two-day events, notably guards Jordan Ross (Pleasant Grove in Utah), Varick Lewis (Monterey Trail in Elk Grove, a Sacramento suburb) and Mier Panoam (Bartlett in Anchorage), as well as front-court players in 6-9 Jalen Lewis (Bishop O’Dowd in Oakland) and 6-6 Osiris Grady (Silverado in Las Vegas).
The camp resumes Sunday at 8:30 a.m., with all-star games set for early Sunday afternoon.
Check back here later Sunday night for a rundown on the entirety of the camp – notably a sophomore class that includes the likes of Windward’s Kijani Wright and Dylan Andrews.
