DOWNEY – The second SoCal Clash, put on by Beach City Hoops (@beachcityhoops), is set for Sunday (Aug. 11) at St. Pius X-St. Matthias Academy High (7851 Gardendale Street).

A girls’ game has been added to the platform that pits standout basketball players from the Classes of 2020 and ’21 against one another.

The girls’ contest is scheduled to tip off at 1 p.m., following by the boys’ game two hours later.

Admission is $10, with kids 5 years of age and young admitted without charge.

The girls’ 2020 squad is paced by three athletes who have already committed to colleges that they will sign letters of intent with in November: Ashley Chevalier (Sierra Canyon/the University of Texas), Sydney Gandy (Orangewood Academy/the University of Idaho) and Chevalier’s Sierra Canyon teammate, Mazzie Harris (UC Davis).

Among the 2020 boys’ standouts are players bound for the University of Utah (Ian Martinez/JSerra), Saint Mary’s (Judah Brown/Newport Pacifica Christian), Yale (Yassine Gharram/Foothills Christian) and Cal State Bakersfield (Jahvy Medearis/Warren).

The 2021 boys’ squad is loaded with elite guards, notably T.J. Wainwright (Westchester), Brenton Knapper (Colony), A.J. Burgin (San Diego), Malik Thomas (Damien), Scotty Washington (St. John Bosco) and K.J. Simpson (Chaminade).

Besides Martinez, Gharram and Medearis, they will also be pitted against standout 2020 guards such as Keith Dinwiddie (Fairfax/pictured), Jaylen Clark (Etiwanda) and D.J. Davis (Corona Centennial).

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
