Prep guards-galore during Sunday camp at Cerritos College

NORWALK – The second Pangos/Kenny Smith League Guard Camp, held Sunday afternoon at Cerritos College, may have attracted only 17 high school players.

But the cumulative quality of those players, and the fact that the three or so hours of instruction, drills and scrimmaging were led by Emmy winning broadcaster Kenny Smith – an NBA point guard for 10 seasons – justified the “less is more” tag for the event.

Although the emphasis was on “guard skills” – notably ball-handling, passing and decision making – the 17 players weren’t limited to just “guards”, per se.

Four of the players are 6-foot-5 or taller: seniors in 6-8 Bradley Ezewiro (Bishop Montgomery) and 6-7 Tari Eason (Federal Way in Washington); 6-5 junior Everett May (Los Alamitos) and 6-7 sophomore Jorge Ochoa (Orange Lutheran).

Eason (who used to live in Los Angeles and was staying with family while in town for the camp) and Ezewiro are two of the most heavily recruited frontcourt players in the western Class of 2020.

Here’s the roster of the players in attendance, by high school class:

Class of 2020: Demetrius Calip (6-3/Taft), Eason, Ezewiro, Justin Gladney (6-0/Fairfax) and Amyr Henry (5-10/Taft).

2021: A.J. Burgin (6-3/San Diego), Corey Curtis (6-3/Las Vegas Trinity), David Elliott (6-3/Birmingham), Brenton Knapper (6-0/Colony) and May.

2022: Dylan Andrews (6-4/Windward), Benny Gealer (6-0/Rolling Hills Prep), Jason Hart, Jr. (6-1/Taft), Tajavis Miller (6-3/Servite), Ochoa and R.J. Smith (6-3/Damien).

2023: Kylan Boswell (5-11/Colony).

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
