IRVINE – What did my spending 13 hours in the Momentous Center leave me with Friday – besides a $50-plus dent on my Visa card because of some insanely over-priced snacks, that is?
It gave me the opportunity to see some outstanding “club teams” and terrific basketball players – some of those, multiple times, on the second dame of The Hoop Circuit’s West Coast Challenge.
The last game of the evening was a cool matchup between Las Vegas-based “Simply Fundamental” and one the top 17s clubs in the west in NorCal’s Lakeshow Elite.
Lakewood was in front in the entire way, with outstanding efforts turned in by the likes of 2020 guards Xavion Brown (Sacramento Sheldon) and Michael Pearson (Modesto Christian), as well as recent San Jose Valley Christian center Jay Allen-Tovar (hotly pursued by many community-college powers across the country), and winning, 52-42.
Lakewood’s got multiple strong defensive efforts, primarily by Brown, to limit the effectiveness of Simply Fundamental point guard, Daishen Nix (who attends Trinity International).
Another upper-tier prospect from the western class of 2019 who stood out Friday was Southern California All-Stars guard Ian Martinez (JSerra), who is already committed to the University of Utah.
But Martinez and his buddies got smacked in their final Friday night game by Select Black (Garden City, ID), 70-42.
Also impressing Friday was the collective efforts of the Prodigy Elite 17s squad, which has Etiwanda High standouts Camren Pierce (PICTURED, Tyree Campbell, Brantly Stevenson and Darvelle Wright, as well as Josh Camper (St. John Bosco), Jarvis Jordan (Pomona) and Mason Machado (Corona Centennial).
Action in the event continues Saturday and wraps up Sunday.
