GARDEN GROVE – The Veritas club program will be represented in the championship games of each of the top 17s and 16s division in the Pangos Summer Sweet 16 Sunday afternoon at MAP Sports Facility.
The “International” squad (made up mostly of players originally from Latin and American countries) had to rally from 10 points down late to edge Arizona Firestone Elite, 54-52, late Saturday via the game-deciding layup from 6-foot-9 Deiman Reyes.
Coach George Zedan’s club also got clutch buckets from 6-7 forward Carlos Rosario and guard Julio Rodriguez in the final couple of minutes.
That set the stage for a 3:20 title game (on Court 1 of the eight-court facility) against the “host” Belmont Shore team, which led the entire contest for a 73-63 victory over Team Zona.
Junior-to-be guard T.J. Wainwright (pictured/he’s set for Westchester High after attending Santa Monica as a sophomore) continued his sizzling play that began Thursday night at Firebaugh High in Lynwood in the Elite 80, while scoring 32 points in quarterfinal Saturday afternoon against Riverside-based Team Determined and then 24 Saturday night.
In the top 16s division, Veritas takes on Cal Supreme in the 11:50 a.m. championship game, also set for Court 1.
Veritas has its own junior-to-be guard, Daniel Esparza (Sonora High in La Habra), who also has dazzled since Thursday night.
Esparza & Company rolled past Spokane-based Team Sabonis, 71-40, in a Saturday afternoon semifinal.
In the other semi, Cal Supreme (which a large contingent of Serra players) came from seven points down in the final five minutes to edge Houdini (all St. Anthony players), 59-57.
