Plenty of on-court sizzle set for final day of Section 7 Team Camp

PHOENIX – Sunday’s final day of the first Section 7 Team Camp is set to bare the basketball “fruit” of a whole lot of work on the part of event organizers’ and high school players and coaches that have made this three-day gathering such a success for all concerned.

Championship games and consolation contests in 10 divisions – one of those for top-flight girls’ squads – are set for Sunday, with shapes of as a whopper showdown for the title in the “All About People” bracket.

That 11:45 a.m. affair, set for Brophy College Prep’s main floor, pits Santa Ana (CA) Mater Dei against Las Vegas Bishop Gorman – projected as the top teams in the west, and two of the top five in the nation, for the 2019-20 season.

One would need a calculator and a lot of time to add all of the games and championships that the Mater Dei and Bishop Gorman teams coached by Gary McKnight and Grant Rice, respectively, have bagged.

Teams are paced by terrific playmakers (Devin Askew/PICTURED and Zaon Collins, respectively), sizzling jump shooters (Mater Dei’s Ryan Evans and the Gaels’ Noah Taitz) and deep groups of “big men”.

That game is sandwiched by title games on Brophy’s “Court 1” featuring other Las Vegas-based programs.

At 10:30, in the Native Wings Bracket, Coronado will be challenged by Los Angles Windward.

Coronado, led backcourt standouts Pop Pop Isaacs (Class of 2022) and Jaden Hardy (2021), takes on Windward, which has gotten quality performances from senior-to-be forward Devin Tillis and Class of 2022 guard Dylan Andrews while knocking off defending California State D-II champion Campolindo, Brophy Prep and Seattle Eastside Catholic in the first three rounds.

It’s a mild upset that Windward is playing for the title, considering that it has played with Southern California’s 2018-19 top freshman, Kijani Wright.

The 1 o’clock SerRX final features Las Vegas Arbor View and Glendale (AZ) Sunnyslope.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
