CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Juniors-to-be Paolo Banchero and Chet Holmgren picked up the top individual honors Saturday evening following the conclusion of the 25th NBPA Top 100 Camp in John Paul Jones Arena – the home of the University of Virginia 2019 national championship program.

The 6-foot-11, 180-pound Holmgren (Minneapolis) was tabbed – by the John Lucas-led camp players’ selection committee – was chosen Most Outstanding Player for Saturday’s 10-team, bracket playoff after he and his “Spurs” teammates knocked off the “Knicks”, 100-83, in the final game.

And the overall camp “Most Outstanding Player” was 6-9 Paolo Banchero (Seattle).

Banchero and his “Warriors” teammates lost to the “Rockets” Saturday morning in a quarterfinal, despite his 22 points, five rebounds, four assists and six steals.

Holmgren averaged 9.7 points, 8.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocked shots during his team’s three games Saturday, which also included a 72-64, opening win against the “Lakers” and a 103-90 semifinal decision against the “76ers”.

Another member of the Class of 2021 for the Spurs – point guard Devin Askew – also played well enough Saturday to merit serious consideration for the honor bestowed upon Holmgren.

Askew and his Santa Ana (CA) Mater Dei teammates are likely to be ranked No. 1 in the West – and Top 5 or so, nationally – when the 2019-20 season gets underway.

He averaged 13.0 points, 6.3 assists and only 1.3 turnovers on Saturday, capping things with his 19-point, six-rebound and eight-assist performance in the title game.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
