ORANGE – The semifinals are set for the top three divisions’ brackets for Monday’s wrap-up of the four-day, Magic Memorial/adidas Gauntlet Regional Qualifier at Orange Lutheran High.

The semis in the 17U BattleZONE bracket tip off at 12:20 p.m., with the Compton Magic Elite squad facing Basketball Training Institute (BTI/based in the San Fernando Valley) on Court 1 and Dream Vision NEXT taking on Team Harden of Arizona on Court 2.

The title game is scheduled for 2:30 on Court 1.

Compton Magic is led by Rancho Christian stalwart Evan Mobley and has also gotten tremendous play over the past three days from Dalen Terry (Hillcrest in Phoenix/PICTURED), Jaylen Clark (Corona Centennial/expected to transfer to Etiwanda) and Yassine Gharram of Foothills Christian El Cajon.

Mobley & Co. whacked Dream Vision’s top squad – which had been unbeaten during the spring on the adidas circuit – by 20 points Saturday in the final of the BattleCup Boost, eight-team bracket play.

And Dream Vision was stunned in a BattleZONE Round of 16 contest by Team Harden (67-66).

BTI scored mild “upsets” on Sunday in knocking off Compton Magic Premier and Las Vegas-based Team Uneek.

It got strong play by Austin Cook of Damien and Keith Higgins of Chaminade, among others.

Dream Vision NEXT has been outstanding throughout the holiday weekend, winning the Bounce bracket Saturday and knocking off the Las Vegas Knicks and SoCal All-Stars Sunday.

Six-foot-nine Boubacar Coulibaly (San Gabriel Academy) has been terrific for Dream Vision NEXT as a dominating shot-blocker, rebounder and inside scorer and could present a reasonably challenge for Mobley should their respective teams get to the Monday final.

The 16U semifinals (played on Courts 1 and 2 and tipping off at 11:15 a.m.), have Team Lillard (the East Bay area in Northern California) facing California Stars Elite (led by Colony 2021 guard Brenton Knapper) on Court 1 and the Las Vegas Knicks facing San Diego’s Game Point on Court 2.

The title game is at 1:25 on Court 1.

In the 15U division semifinals, also at 11:15 but on Courts 3 and 4 (downstairs from the main gymnasium), Dream Vision plays Team Harden on Court 3 while EBO (Fresno) plays L.A. Elite Premier on Court 4.

That championship will also be contested at 1:25 but on Court 2.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
